depression is mostly just a repetition of pattern

a dolphin
on a
texas beach
dies
after beachgoers
try to ride it.

a friend’s mom
dies
and i try to
make a joke,
“welcome to
the
dead
parents
club.”

a man who
wears shorts
in winter
puts a flag
up on the back
of his boat,
the flag
featuring a
cartoon skeleton
draped in an
American flag,
with
automatic rifles
crossed
in the background,
and an
aggressive statement
in support of
guns.

a woman
wants
to get a
photo of herself
on the edge of
a cliff.
fields of
taut,
young
skin.
a suggestion of
material
stretched tight
over tantalizing flesh.
a wide,
toothy smile.

an edge,
a brief feeling
of falling,
then,
floating.

so
much
sky.
